What to pack for trekking up to 5000 – 6000 m

Just some suggestions. Consider the length of the trip, how cold it can become and weight restrictions. Weight restrictions can be on flights, porters or your ability to carry.

Clothes

  • Wind and waterproof jacket and pants (goretex or similar)
  • Warm and not heavy jacket (down, primaloft or similar)
  • Wool underwear (long pant, short pants, long-sleeved sweater, short-sleeved sweater … how many changes depends on length, temperatures and weight restrictions)
  • Fleece sweater(s)
  • (Wind proof west)
  • Wool neck
  • Thin gloves
  • Thick mitts
  • Minimum on windproof pant (with the possibility to remove leggs or add shorts)
  • Caps (one warm and one lighter for sun protection)
  • Mountain shoes. Used before and choose shoes from on how cold it will become, weather you will be using crampons and so on.
  • Socks (some warm, some lighter – depending on the trip)
  • Some light shoes for the evenings
  • Some light changes of clothes to use in the evenings
  • Scarf to cover you when windyDiv til trekking
  • (Flip flops if there is a shower)
  • (Inflatable sleeping pad if you stay in tents. When I got the Exped Downmat my life in a tent became a lot happier)

Equipment

  • Poles (if trekking in Nepal you can buy cheep one in Kathmandu which probably will last)
  • Waterproof packsack to use around all your clothes and other stuff you dont want wet (garbage bags is a cheaper solution which will also work)
  • Water bottles and/or camelback (if trekking in Nepal you can buy cheep one in Kathmandu). If you are going high you probably need insulation on your camelback hose.
  • Sunscreen
  • Travel towels
  • Headlight
  • Pocket knife
  • Toiletries (pack small bottles)
  • Sleeping bag. So your choice means a lot for your sleeping comfort. If you stay in tea houses you will probably be able to get blankets. But if you stay in tents check how cold the nights will become.
  • (Silk) liner for your sleeping bag
  • (Some small padlocks)
  • (Emergencies whistles)
  • (Small seat pad)
  • Emergency blanket (something like this: https://www.amazon.com/camping-emergency-blankets/b?ie=UTF8&node=3401221)
  • Water purification tablets
  • Antibac
  • Wipes
  • (Ziplockbags)
  • First-aid stuff (pain killer, for flue/cold, adhesive plaster, blister plaster, sports tape, stomach stuff  ….)
  • One day backpack (35l ++) and a duffel bag for your main luggage if you use porters or yak/donkey/horse. They usually prefer duffelbags. If you carry everything yourselves choose what you like :-).
